Chapter 14

Gideon crouched behind a line of shrubs, more than enough to conceal himself in the dim light and far enough away that another vampire couldn't sense his presence. His acute hearing picked up the conversations inside the house while he glimpsed people moving past windows now and again, their silhouettes easy to see with the lighted background inside the dwelling.

How dare the Vampire Judicial Cabinet sentence him? Attempt to rule over him? Control his life? He'd walked the earth longer than all but one of the current cabinet members, a good five times longer than his target presently inside the house, making him the most vulnerable and first selection for revenge.

They put out an extermination contract on him and for what? Because he feasted as vampires were meant to feast on fresh hot blood straight from the victim. None of the limp, cold, bagged blood now mixed with various flavors and textures. No. His meals remained as they always had been, a young healthy human, born to satisfy his appetite. The others, his brethren, softened, turned on their own kind in order to bow to the meek, weak, and primitive humans. Humans that killed in order to have fresh meat on their table, yet protested loudly if one of their kind met the same fate with a superior species. Vampires sympathetic to the humans had betrayed him. For that, they would suffer the ultimate punishment.

He spat at the sheer laziness, frailty, and ignorance shown by the supposed leaders of the local vampire society. Once a powerful and thriving group, they slunk to the humans on their stomachs, begging to be domesticated like a dog, and now relying totally on the former source of nutrition to provide scraps of meals, protection from mobs and extremists, while dictating the rules they were to live by.

Not him. He didn't survive a thousand years by being a lap dog.

A grim smile played over his lips. Let the young Ethan fret over the chit and her pet rabbit. The distraction would prove his downfall, considering something more lethal and worrisome loomed outside. Him. What he deserved, not only for the traitorous act, but for his ignorance and negligence in basic survival skills. Only the strong survived.

A dark-headed man passed his line of vision. Ethan. Haughty, arrogant purebred. Gideon snarled. Purebreds, though few, considered themselves better than everyone else. Presumptuous foolishness on their part. Age dictated powers and abilities, the years providing further strength along with wisdom. Birth parents remained inconsequential. Another fact he meant to drill into his victim before ending his existence.

Glancing at the sky, Gideon retreated, using the shadows to cover his presence.

In three days he would return to kill the first member of the Cabinet that had dared to pass sentence on him as well as drink every last sip of blood from the human companions. The purebred would be the first, but not the last, not until every member of the Cabinet lay dead and buried. One by one, they would all pay for their audacity.
